This is the intosport netball academy. This video guide will teach you how to intercept a shot.
When the opposition reach your shooting circle, you can often be the last line of defence and your ability to defend your goal may be the difference between winning & losing. As a goal defender or goal keeper it is your job to make sure that it is as difficult as possible for the opposition to score a goal. The easier it is for them to get into the shooting circle and line up a shot the more likely they are to score.
There are a number of techniques used by defenders to try and prevent the attaching team from scoring. In this video we will show you the jump technique. Getting into the right position is the key to successful defence.
Make sure you are positioned between the shooter and the goalpost. The closest you are allowed to the shooter is 3 feet from their landing foot. Standing directly between the attacker and the goalpost will give you the best chance to jump and deflect the shot. Give yourself a strong base with feet shoulder width apart, your weight on the balls of your feet and your knees bent.
It is important that you are balanced at all times when jumping towards the shooter. If you cannot control the jump and you touch the shooter then you will give away a penalty. Being able to read the intentions of the shooter is vital to help you make a good interception. Keep focussed on the shooters hand. As soon as the shooting action begins you should drive forwards and upwards extending your arms towards the shooters hands and the ball in order to cut off the ball at its lowest point. Once you have landed prepare yourself quickly to capture the rebound.
Interception practices with a partner are a great way for you and your friends to work on your netball skills. Whilst one of you is going to be working on the interception, another is going to be working on their shooting, combining two practices in one.
One shooter and one defender will stand in the circle with one person acting as a feeder on the outside. On the feeders command the shooter will get into the position to receive the ball. The defender should allow the shooter to collect the ball then will get into position to try to intercept the shot. The shooter should then attempt the shot whilst the defender tries to intercept. The feeder can move around the circle to vary the shooting position. This will help the shooter and defender in developing their skills.
When the shooter receives the ball, position yourself between the shooter and the post. Adopt a crouch position & keep watching the shooters hands for any sign of movement. As soon as you see the shooter start to release the ball, drive forwards reaching to block the shot.
When practicing the interception concentrate on when the shooter will receive the ball, move to position yourself between the shooter and the goal and get in a crouch position ready to intercept.
