10 Ways to a Fitter You This Year

So Christmas is over and 2010 has finally arrived, it’s back to work and time to put those New Year resolutions into practice. Pretty soon though January will be become February and life will start to get in the way and those major changes you wanted to make to yourself will be put back to next year. But here at intosport.com we’re committed to bringing sport and activity to all our members so here’s our guide to 10 ways to keep that effort and desire up for getting fit this year.

  1. Be in it for the long haul! You didn’t get out of shape in two weeks and you won’t get back into shape in two weeks so don’t be disheartened if you don’t see immediate results. Make sport part of your routine and over the next 12 months you’ll see real changes.
  2. Make it fun! You’re not likely to stick with the changes you’ve made if it’s boring and uninspiring so try to take up sports that bring a smile to your face. Perhaps join a club or get a fitness partner. You’ll enjoy it a lot more when you’re meeting new people and spending time with friends.
  3. Change your diet! You can work out all you want but if you’re binging on burgers and beer everyday then there’s little point. Don’t starve yourself or deny all of life’s pleasures but enjoy everything in moderation and you’ll feel a lot healthier as well as look healthier. Try to get good helpings of fruit, vegetables and unrefined carbs and cut out the saturated fats.
  4. Try to take up sports that bring a smile to your face!
  5. Take Advantage! Getting fit is in fashion so look around for the best deals so you’re not spending too much. Check out your local sports centre for on and off peak times; see whether you qualify for an age group that gets free swimming. Getting fit shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg so see what’s on offer.
  6. Get into Running! A great way to avoid costs and get fit when it suits you is to simply run. Don’t worry about when a court is free or when a class starts, just put your trainers on and head out the front door. Also making an effort to run in an environment that’s easy on the eye i.e. meadows or along a river will make it a much more enjoyable experience. View Running Zone
  7. Walk More! If you need to nip down the shops for something you’ve forgotten, try to not always hop in the car. The fitness benefits of walking are hugely underrated and walking an extra mile or two each week can have a great effect over the course of a year.
  8. Get on your Bike! If it’s a bit too far to walk but the car still seems unnecessary then why not cycle? Whilst being good for the environment, think of the money you could save on petrol by using your bike more often. During the summer months maybe spend a Saturday or a Sunday with the family by taking a picnic and riding around the country side for the day.
  9. Active Holidays! Instead of the usual two weeks lying motionless by the pool spend your holiday being active. Give surfing a go, spend the time skiing or go hiking. All ways to enjoy your time off keep healthy and get a better experience for your money.
  10. Go back to your Roots! If you’re not sure what to take up or don’t feel like trying something completely new then go back to your school days. If at school you were a keen and talented tennis player then why not rediscover your youth and pick up the racket again.
