Hi Mystic, I’ve umpired a couple of games and have found it very difficult to keep an eye on all that’s going on. Have you any suggestions about how I can increase my skill level? Apart from the obvious one of getting on and doing it while a more skilled umpire watches and giving me feedback. Thanks.

Re: New Umpires

Hey,
Here are some tips I use.
Keep square onto the court this way you can see more.
Watch the team around the ball and how they react in situations you’ll start to get a feel of what will happen next.
Dont just watch the ball players break the rules trying to get to it so look in the balls general direction.
Keep just ahead of the ball when umpiring.
Try and see whos free its more likly they’ll recieve the pass.
Watch the players who seem to make more mistakes carefully.
Try and imagine your in their position what would be best to do.
Dont turn to run in one direction ( apart from if your going back for a center pass) side step and keep square on, it can look abit silly if you jump to high but dont worry about that.
The more experience you get the better and sharper your reactiobs will be so try to umpire more often.
Use the internet for tips aswell there can be afew hidden gems.
Buy the umpiring books tgey help alot with the rules and stuff.
Also take an online umpiring exam this gives alot of situations to respind to but you are given a certain amount of time to respond in.
Get your kids to help aswell and do some situations so you know what to pick up on.
And finally having any umpire to give you tips, tricks and help will be useful, sometimes they see things you dont.
Hope this helped
Mystic
