Tossing the ball for a serve

is it better/worse/wrong/right for ball to spin a lot when tossing it up for a serve? how far up and straight should it ideally go?

Re: Tossing the ball for a serve

you dont always have to toss the ball straight up. different serves require different tosses. if you? toss the ball a little behind your head , top spins will come out more naturally... try different stuff , see what works out, but its always important to have someone experienced watch over you, otherwise you’ll most likely get bad technique from the start, and even if later on you get used to it, smart oponents will find a way to abuse the gaps in your technique , and that could cost you=)

i think the best players toss the ball to a similar place most times though. Even though he’s like uber brilliant federer always seems to throw the ball up to the exact same place. if you look at some people like murray they throw it to the same place as well and that helps them disguise the serve’s direction

How ever high you toss the ball you don’t really want to be hitting more thna two feet above yourself as this will mean the center of the rack won’t be connecting with the ball.

Typically, if you’re a tall type, then toss it a bit in front....just a tiny bit so that you have to move your body forward slightly as you serve....that will help with the pace. If not, or if your playing defensive, then toss straight up like mentioned and give the racket a small ’tweak’. I find this helps beautifully....

Re: Tossing the ball for a serve

Flat Serve: In front of you and high so you can have your body weight into the ball.
Kick Serve: over your head so you have to get on top of it and give it a kick when you want to hit it.
Slice Serve: A little bit over to the right so you can go outside the ball to give it spin.
sometimes, you can have the same toss for a flat serve and a slice serve.

BlackCat had the best explantion, i just wanted to add that it is important to have a consistent toss. Very very accurately consistent, just as consistent and fine tuned as your serving motion.
