Topspin forehand help

I had a lesson with a young coach at my club last week and he told me that to hit a ball with topspin I have to angle my racquet so that the strings make contact on the upper part of the back of the ball, not the back of the ball as it does with my normal forehand. I'm not sure he's right about where I should hit the ball. Can anyone help?

Re: Topspin forehand help

It depends how much topspin you want to put on the ball. For a higher arc aim to brush up the back of the ball contacting it around the centre point. Experiment by drop feeding balls for yourself. Fix string at various heights above the net using vertical extension posts and practice spinning the ball up and over it. For great topspin use the semi-open stance, get your weight on to your back foot as you take your racket back and rotate your whole body forward and round while hitting up the back of the ball. The faster the racket head speed the more revolutions you will put on the ball. Dont hold back, top spin needs pretty fast racket head movement. The David Lloyd vids are a bit limited. I was expecting more in depth instruction.

Re: Topspin forehand help

And how about learning the kick (top spin ) serve while you are at it! You may as well, you will never regret it and you will be on the way to becoming an advanced player. Need to toss the ball directly above your head and brush up the back of the ball and outwards with your racket , ie throw it up and out towards the side fencing. A good tip is to practice this from a few feet outside the courts and spin the ball up and over the perimeter fence so that it lands in the court. Thats the sort of arc you are aiming for. When you achieve it put it into practice in friendly games to build confidence and consistency. When you master it you will get great satisfaction watching your opponents struggle to return it - except if they are Andy Murray of course!!!.

Re: Topspin forehand help

Here’s an odd tip, topspin is/depends (on) the angle your racquet hits the ball. There are many ways to describe it but I hope this one widened your perspective.

Re: Topspin forehand help

Hi
to get a superb topspin you need to keep racket frame angle against the ball in most possible "closed" angle.

Try newest method www.hit-buddy.com

I tested it and in greatly helps to improve top spin style swing with closed racket angle
