In this video guide we’ll show you the technique for hitting the smash. The smash has a very similar action to the tennis serve and your intention, when hitting a smash, should be to win the point or at least make it very difficult for your opponent to make the return.

Key Points:

Point 1:
The smash has an action very similar to the serve, except that the ball is already in the air.
Point 2:
Start from a ready position at the net and begin to move back with side steps as soon as you realise that the ball is going up in the air.
Point 3:
Always try to hit a forehand smash if you can as it’s a more powerful, attacking shot that’s likely to win you the point.
Point 4:
Hold the racket in a continental grip, turn your shoulders and take the racket back as if you were getting ready to throw it overarm up at the ball.
Point 5:
As the ball begins to drop, throw the racket head at the ball and contact the ball slightly in front of you at full height.
