In this video guide we’ll show you how to play a low volley shot.

The low volley shot is played either when your opponent has returned the tennis ball very low over the net, or when you are moving forwards to the net, but are forced to play the ball from a position a little further away from the net than you’d like. The action and grip for the low volley is the same for both the forehand and backhand.

Key Points:

Point 1:
The grip for a low volley is the continental grip for both a forehand or backhand low volley and is single handed, even if you normally have a two handed backhand groundstroke.
Point 2:
Bend your knees so that you are lower to the ground, but keep your racket head up in order to still punch the ball.
Point 3:
Make sure the shot is short and sharp with no backswing and a very short follow through.
Point 4:
Open the racket face so that the ball will go up a little to clear the net and recover quickly to a good ready position about 2 metres back from the net.
