In this video guide we will introduce you to the backhand ground stroke. While almost every player hits the forehand with only one hand on the racket, with the backhand, many players hold the racket with two hands. while others hit it with one.

The choice of one or two hands is really a personal preference, not because one is better than the other. At the highest level in professional tennis you’ll see the world’s top men and women using both methods. Some players also find the backhand shot easier to control and develop than the forehand because to them it’s a very natural stroke. When you hit a backhand your arm moves in a natural pathway to hit the ball.

Even if you do hit a two handed backhand you’ll still have to hit with one hand for a backhand slice and most players hit the backhand volley with one hand too. Now that you’ve seen how different players hit the backhand, the time has come for you to decide whether you will hit with one hand or two.

If you’re learning to play tennis for the first time you can try both methods and see which one you find most comfortable and natural to hit.
