In this video guide we’ll show you how to hit a variation of the basic tennis volley known as the drive volley shot.

The drive volley is an attacking shot that’s usually played between the baseline and the service line as you’re moving forwards and it can be hit on the forehand and backhand side.

Drive volleys are normally played on a higher ball that would land close to the baseline if it were left to bounce. Instead of waiting for the ball to bounce, you hit a drive volley when the ball is around shoulder height with a swinging action rather than the usual short, sharp volley action.

Key Points:

Point 1:
The drive volley is usually played from a position much further back in the court than the basic volley.
Point 2:
The grip will be the normal forehand or backhand grip and make sure you start from a good ready position near the baseline.
Point 3:
Once it’s clear that the ball is travelling higher over the net and you decide to hit a drive volley, instead of waiting for the ball to bounce move forwards, turning your shoulders and taking your racket back behind your shoulder as you do so.
Point 4:
Use the other hand to help balance the racket and then hold it out in front of you to track the ball and keep your weight moving forward.
Point 5:
Swing the racket through to contact the ball at about shoulder height and to the side and in front of you and then recover quickly to a position close to the net to be ready for the next shot.
