In this netball position guide we’re going to find out more about the Wing Defence.
The wing defence plays a key role in defence and attack. When defending, their job is to close down the opposition wing attack and to try and disrupt any plays between feeders and shooters by protecting the circle edge. In attack the wing defence will link up with the goal attack and goal keeper in moving the ball quickly down court, when it’s regained following an opposition’s attack. They’ll also feed and support the centre and wing attack in moves ultimately designed to deliver the ball to the shooters in the circle.
The key skills needed to compete in this position are good stamina, quick feet, powerful defensive skills and the ability to throw a range of quick and accurate passes. The wing defence needs to be able to man-to-man mark well, and be able to switch quickly to mark different players, along with being able to execute an effective zone defence if it’s needed.
