In this position guide we’re going to look at the Goal Defender.

The goal defender’s main role in the team is to work with the goal shooter to stop the opposition from scoring and to be a highly effective link from defence to attack when the ball is in regained.

The key skills of the goal defender are to be able to mark opponents closely and in doing so close down space, slow down the oppositions attacking move, apply pressure and limit the options of the attacking team. Players in this position need good fitness levels and agility as well as good communication skills to link up well with the goal keeper and the centre court players.
